What is The Kimberly Process?
Conflict diamonds, also known as “blood diamonds,” are diamonds that are mined and sold by rebels to fund military action against legitimate, internationally recognized governments. These diamonds first captured the world’s attention during a brutal conflict in Sierra Leone that occurred in the late 1990s. As a result, the diamond industry announced a “zero tolerance” policy for conflict diamonds. The Kimberly Process is a certification system ensuring that a diamond has come from a conflict-free source. Today, over 99% of all rough diamonds on the global market have been verified as originating from non-conflict sources.
